WES-BCA aims to improve the protection of the environment, the restoration of biodiversity and the management of scarce water resources, while enhancing the resilience to climate change in the Mediterranean region, strengthening the formulation and enforcement of the relevant policies of the Partner Countries (PCs) and the two regional political frameworks, namely the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Barcelona Convention.
Marine LitterThe WES-BCA project will build on the experience and achievements of its predecessor projects (WES, SWIM-H2020 SM, SWIM SM, Horizon 2020 CB/MEP) and provide continuity, further integrating new elements and institutional, scientific and technical developments. The ‘integration’ concept will be coupled with regional exchanges of good practices and lessons learned (regional activities) and the adapted, more focused, continuation of the WES work at the national level (country-specific activities).
The WES-BCA project will continue to provide a regional platform for the PCs, implementing numerous actionable regional and national activities, strengthening capacities and supporting the region’s overall efforts to transition toward sustainability. It will push forward the EU Agenda for the Mediterranean, as well as the agendas of its two institutional partners, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Barcelona Convention system. The WES-BCA project primarily cooperates with its Focal Points in each country. Given the crosscutting nature of WES-BCA, a wide range of national and regional stakeholders are involved, including:
Beyond the government officials from the competent line Ministries or their affiliate entities, WES-BCA support will address authorities in charge of cross-sectorial activities or inter-ministerial coordination and authorities at regional and local level.
Civil society plays an important role in raising awareness and drawing public attention to environmental and water related issues. Civil society organisations are key partners in mobilising decision-makers and in catalysing behavioural change among the local population. Civil society, and when relevant youth and women’s associations, will be targeted by WES-BCA to facilitate the wide transmission of the main messages.
Private actors need to be increasingly engaged in order to promote sustainable private sector development and harness skills, innovation and knowledge for addressing environmental and water related issues.
The Implementing Consortium includes leading European and regional entities with complementary skills and experience, to bring a pragmatic approach to capacity building and strong technical and technological expertise in the design and implementation of the WES-BCA project.
